The science of hair loss, thinning and breakage — and why we refuse to cut corners on ingredients
Almost every woman who writes to us begins the same way: “I am losing too much hair.” Sometimes it started after a pregnancy. Sometimes after a season of stress, an illness, a crash diet, or years of hard water and chemical treatments. The fear is always the same — that it will not come back.
It usually can. But only if you understand what is actually happening on your scalp, and only if what you put on it is real.
Every strand on your head lives through a cycle: anagen (active growth, lasting two to six years), catagen (a short transition), and telogen (rest, after which the strand sheds). At any given time, roughly 85–90% of your hair should be in the growth phase. Losing 50 to 100 strands a day is completely normal.
Hair loss becomes visible when too many follicles are pushed out of growth and into rest at once — a pattern dermatologists call telogen effluvium. The shedding you notice today usually reflects something that happened to your body two to three months ago.
Look at the strand you have just lost. If there is a small white bulb at the end, the hair shed from the root — that is hair fall, and the answer lies in the scalp and in your health. If the strand is short and blunt at both ends, that is breakage — and the answer lies in the hair shaft: protein, moisture and gentler handling.
Treat the scalp for hair fall. Treat the strand for breakage. Most women need both.
This is the part of the industry nobody wants to talk about. A shampoo can legally be sold as a “rosemary” or “castor” product with a fraction of a percent of the actual ingredient inside it. A jar can be photographed with saffron threads on top while the formula itself contains a synthetic fragrance called “saffron.” Nothing about that is illegal. It is simply deceptive.
We built Royally Homemade in the opposite direction. We source Jamaican black castor oil, cold-pressed rosemary, AnaGain™ pea sprout extract, silk protein, hydrolysed keratin, coconut and flaxseed the way they are meant to be sourced — small batch, high grade, and expensive. Our margins are thinner because of it. That is a decision, not an accident.
While much of the industry competes on marketing, we compete on what is actually inside the jar.
No cosmetic product can regrow hair from a follicle that has permanently scarred or closed. Advanced male- and female-pattern loss, alopecia areata and scarring alopecia need a dermatologist, and often prescription treatment. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something. What a well-formulated ritual can do is reduce shedding, calm an inflamed scalp, stop breakage, thicken the appearance of the strand, and give the follicles you still have the best possible conditions to grow.
We would rather keep a customer for ten years by being honest than win her for one month by exaggerating.
Between 50 and 100 strands a day is normal. What matters more than the count is the trend — whether your parting is widening, whether your ponytail feels thinner, and whether shedding has clearly increased over the last two to three months.
Shedding usually reduces first, often within four to six weeks of consistent scalp care. Visible new growth takes eight to twelve weeks because hair grows roughly one centimetre a month. Any brand promising regrowth in seven days is not describing biology.
They do different jobs. Rosemary is a scalp active and works best as a leave-on gel with real contact time. Jamaican black castor oil is a conditioning pre-wash treatment that reduces mechanical breakage along the shaft. Most women see the best results using both, on different days.
Postpartum shedding is hormonal and self-limiting — it typically peaks around three to four months after delivery and settles by nine to twelve months. Gentle scalp care, adequate iron and protein, and avoiding tight ties will reduce breakage and support regrowth, though the hormonal cycle itself has to run its course.
Because of what is inside them. Actives such as AnaGain pea sprout extract, silk protein and genuine Jamaican black castor oil cost many times more than the fragrance-and-filler versions used to make a product look premium. We handcraft in small batches and test every batch on human hair before packaging.
No. Daily oiling can build up on the scalp and, combined with vigorous massage, can worsen breakage. Two pre-wash oil treatments a week is plenty. Scalp actives, by contrast, benefit from more frequent use — three to four nights weekly.
Hard water mineral deposits stiffen the cuticle and dull the hair. A clarifying wash and a filter on your shower head make a measurable difference, and a protein-and-moisture mask afterwards helps restore softness.
If you notice sudden patchy loss, visible scalp scarring, intense itching or burning, or shedding that continues heavily beyond six months, see a dermatologist. Also get your ferritin, vitamin D, B12 and thyroid checked — deficiency-driven hair loss will not respond to topical care alone.
